He angitutanga mutunga kore mō te ihumanea pēnā i a koe: Endless possibilities for an intern like you at Auckland Council

He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Our Group Strategy, Transformation and Partnership department interns are involved in everything from researching a diverse range of local government services to supporting the delivery of important strategy and transformation initiatives across the council group.

You’ll work alongside experienced strategists, change managers, analysts, and partnership specialists to deliver robust thinking and change for the organisation. The department includes several high-performing teams, including:

  • The Strategist Unit
  • Value for Money team
  • Strategic Programmes Office
  • Council-Controlled Organisations & Partnerships team
  • Enterprise Portfolio Management Office (EPMO)
  • Service Strategy and Partnerships team

This internship offers a unique opportunity to see how long-term strategy is developed, how performance is measured, and how complex change is managed in one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest and most diverse organisations.

Grow your skills and start your career. Our internship programme ensures you get to do real work that matters and learn from experts in your field. You'll engage in meaningful work, contributing to the development of Auckland as a world-class city.

We offer a supportive environment, with mentorship and networking opportunities. You’ll be part of our internship whānau and will be supported every step of the way by a team who want you to succeed, including a buddy, intern liaison, Careers Team, and the wider intern cohort.

You’ll spend the summer developing your technical and soft skills, and experiencing what life is like at Auckland Council. By the end of the internship, you’ll hopefully have a good idea of where you want your career to go. Interns may receive priority consideration for our 2-year Graduate Programme, setting the stage for your future career.

He kōrero mōu: About you
You’re enthusiastic about learning and contributing to the future of Auckland. You’re curious about how local government works and motivated to gain practical experience in strategy, transformation and partnership work.

You bring strong research and analytical skills, and you’re comfortable finding, digesting, and presenting insights to inform strategic thinking. You’ve had some experience using verified sources for research and presenting your findings using Microsoft Office tools such as PowerPoint and Excel and you’re keen to develop those skills further.

Your passion for local government and the role it plays in Aucklanders’ daily lives sets you apart.

To apply you must:

  • Be in your penultimate year studying towards a relevant Bachelor's degree, or continuing into a Master’s level of study in 2026.
  • Be eligible to work in New Zealand full-time from November 2025- February 2026
