- Lead strategic waste and carbon reduction initiatives for Lower Hutt
- Oversee landfill operations and kerbside services to drive innovation and impact
- Great benefits including wellbeing leave and flexible work options
About the Role
Our Waste and Resource Recovery Team is at the forefront of delivering waste and resource recovery solutions for Lower Hutt, with a focus on continuous improvement, carbon reductions, and innovation.
In this pivotal role, you will lead all aspects of the construction and operation of Silverstream landfill and the management of Council's closed landfills. Through your direct reports, you will also oversee the management of Council's refuse, recycling, and green waste kerbside collection contracts, and drive the implementation of Council's Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, with a strong focus on resource recovery and behaviour change.
Hutt City Council has already made significant improvements in the city's waste and resource recovery services, with a particular focus on reducing emissions associated with solid waste management and disposal. But we need to go further, and faster. This includes completing the full electrification of our kerbside service, step-change improvements to resource recovery services, continuing to decarbonise our waste service contracts, and the diversion of residential and commercial food waste from the landfill.
This is a rare opportunity to support not just an organisation, but an entire city on its waste and carbon reduction journey.
About You
You will need to be confident that we can be successful in reducing waste, improving the recovery of resources, and reducing emissions, to help avoid the worst climate impacts.
You'll bring:
- Proven leadership experience in managing diverse teams, with the ability to develop and align staff around operational delivery, service delivery, and strategic goals.
- A collaborative leadership style that promotes innovation, continuous improvement, and team growth.
- A relevant tertiary qualification and experience in landfill operations, resource recovery operations, or waste strategy. A significant part of the role is overseeing the management of Silverstream landfill. While you don't need to be an engineer, you will need to be comfortable interacting with engineers and understanding technical matters quickly.
- A strong commercial mindset and understanding of operational delivery in a complex environment, proven experience in contract and financial management
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with internal and external stakeholders.
