Mercury is a bold future focused organisation, leading the way with renewable energy and working toward a sustainable future. At the heart is our purpose; Taking care of tomorrow, connecting people and place today. This pushes us to do all we can to create a better future for our people, communities, and Aotearoa.

Our Opportunity:

At Mercury, we're a proudly New Zealand-listed company operating a diverse and evolving business with a strong mix of onshore and offshore activity. As part of our close-knit and high-performing finance team, you'll step into a role that offers far more than compliance - this is your chance to contribute meaningful insights, influence business decisions, and engage with complex, high-impact tax work.

We're looking for a Tax Manager to join us on a 15 month fixed term contract covering parental leave. You'll be someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and enjoys tackling a wide range of tax matters, from direct and indirect taxes to strategic advisory. This is a dynamic, hands-on role where no two days are the same, it's ideal for someone who enjoys applying their technical expertise while working closely with stakeholders across the business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage the preparation of the NZ income tax return(s), including providing support to the finance team in preparing the tax calculations for separate legal entities, reviewing the calculations for accuracy and completeness and preparing the consolidated tax return
  • Review FBT, GST, AIL and PAYE returns/ payments
  • Review of key contracts and material projects for tax risks and opportunities for improvement
  • Manage the process surrounding Mercury's research and development tax incentive claim, and undertake the calculation
  • Coordinate the preparation of and review Mercury's tax provision and deferred tax calculations for statutory, business reporting and cashflow forecasting
  • Partner with the business to identify tax risks and opportunities, helping shape smart, commercially sound decisions.

We are looking for:

  • Relevant qualification preferably with a major in Accounting or Tax
  • Achieved, or working towards, recognised professional body qualification
  • Experience in a specialist tax role - corporate experience is preferred but not essential
  • A strong working knowledge of NZ tax legislation (Income Tax, GST, and Tax Administration Acts).
  • Working knowledge of NZ IAS 12 and basic understanding of general accounting principles, including IFRS
  • A confident communicator who can translate complex tax concepts into practical advice for a range of stakeholders.

Mercury offers:

  • A diverse workplace where your unique abilities and talents will be recognised and valued
  • The opportunities, career paths and facilities associated with working for one of New Zealand's largest energy providers
  • Modern offices with collaborative work spaces
  • Access to our e-bikes and great end of trip facilities
  • Fresh fruit delivered twice a week

Mercury is a learning organisation that is committed to providing you with opportunities to grow and develop that will benefit you now and in the future. Part of your role includes building your skillset and mindset through a variety of ways. We believe this creates an energised, innovative and agile work environment where you will feel valued.

At Mercury, we believe that having a team of individuals with different backgrounds, experience and capability working together makes us stronger and better as an organisation. We know that some candidates may only apply for a role if they meet all of the criteria. If you have a passion for creating Energy Freedom and want to join our team, we encourage you to apply for any role that matches your skills, capabilities and interests, even if you aren't sure if you meet all of the criteria.

A full position description is available below. Applications close 18th August at 5:00pm. Please note that Mercury retains the right to bring a particularly strong candidate through to interview more quickly.
