Mō te tūranga | About the Role
Reporting into the Chief Operating Officer for Institutional & Business Banking (IBB, this is a pivotal leadership role responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the risk, compliance, and QA frameworks across IBB. You’ll provide strategic oversight to ensure that IBB operates within risk appetite, complies with internal and external policies, and meets regulatory requirements.
You’ll work closely with the IBB Chief Operating Officer and leadership teams to embed a culture of risk awareness, ensure robust controls, and deliver high-quality outcomes that support sustainable growth and customer trust.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of IBB’s risk, compliance, and QA frameworks.
- Champion a culture of risk awareness aligned with Westpac NZ’s broader strategy.
- Provide strategic insights on emerging risks, regulatory changes, and mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with laws and regulations including RBNZ, FMA, AML/CFT, CCCFA, FSLAA, CoFI, and the Privacy Act.
- Establish and maintain QA programmes and control testing plans.
- Identify and resolve process and control gaps across IBB.
- Lead and develop a high-performing team, fostering talent and succession planning.
- Build strong relationships with regulators and industry peers to ensure best practice.
- Monitor and report on risk, compliance, and QA outcomes.
- Ensure timely logging and resolution of operational losses and compliance incidents.
- Maintain and test Business Continuity Plans (BCPs).
- Stay current with regulatory, environmental, and industry developments
Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?
- Tertiary qualification in Law, Finance, Risk, Commerce or a related discipline
- 10+ years’ experience in risk, compliance, QA, or audit within the banking or financial services sector
- Deep regulatory knowledge e.g. Basel, APRA, FSLAA, Code of Banking Practice, Sarbanes-Oxley and NZ Legislation
- Demonstrated experience managing relationships with regulatory bodies (e.g. RBNZ, FMA)
- Demonstrated experience operating at senior leadership level, and with executive-level and Board reporting exposure
- 5+ years’ experience leading high-performing risk, compliance and QA teams within complex business environments
- Highest level of senior stakeholder management, with the ability to positively influence and negotiate
- Strong strategic thinking and risk management capabilities
- Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical business processes and frameworks
- Demonstrated success leading large-scale transformation and driving major changes.
