Job Description
Senior Software Engineer – Platform Engineering
Kia ora!
At Air New Zealand, we’re on a journey to reimagine and elevate our digital platforms. Cloud computing enables us to modernize and consolidate infrastructure, automate workflows, and drive next-gen innovation — all powered by a robust multi-cloud strategy across AWS and Azure.
As we continue our transformation, we’re seeking a Senior Software Engineer with strong DevOps experience to join our DevOps Chapter area with a focus on Platform Engineering. You'll help design and deliver platform services that empower our product teams to build, deploy, and operate their applications with confidence and scale.
The Role You’ll Play
As a senior engineer, you will:
- Design and implement scalable cloud infrastructure solutions.
- Lead CI/CD platform development, owning build, test, and deployment systems used by multiple product teams.
- Mentor and support junior engineers, encouraging best practices and technical excellence.
- Champion automation—reducing manual toil and improving operability through Infrastructure as Code.
- Work closely with software engineers, SREs, and security teams to deliver secure, observable, and resilient platforms.
- Contribute to and influence platform strategy, tooling choices, and roadmap decisions across the organisation.
- Support the ongoing operation and evolution of key platforms including Kubernetes (EKS), ECS, API Gateway, and Kafka.
- Proactively identify and resolve performance, scalability, and reliability challenges across these platforms.
What You’ll Bring
- 5+ years' experience in platform or software engineering, with a track record of leading technical outcomes.
- Expertise in CI/CD principles, DevSecOps practices, and platform development.
- Strong skills in Kubernetes (EKS preferred), infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation), and cloud automation.
- Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps toolsets, especially Pipelines and Repos.
- Proficiency in monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, etc.
- Certified in Azure or AWS (preferred).
- Excellent communicator with a collaborative mindset and ability to influence cross-functional teams.
- Deep understanding of cloud-native architecture, modern deployment patterns, and security fundamentals.
What You’ll Get in Return
- A chance to work on industry-leading, high-impact platforms that support Air New Zealand’s digital products.
- A respectful, diverse, and inclusive team culture where you’ll be supported and valued.
- A collaborative environment with continuous learning and career development opportunities.
- Competitive salary and unique staff travel benefits to help you explore the world.
- Flexibility and support to bring your authentic self to work — we embrace individuality and creativity.
