We're looking for a Staff Data Engineer to join our Data & Analytics Platform - someone who thrives on solving complex data challenges, uplifts engineering maturity, and leads by influence rather than authority. This is a newly created individual contributor role that is between a "Lead Data Engineer" and a "Principal Engineer", designed to bring deep technical expertise and thought leadership into our data engineering domain.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
As a Staff Data Engineer, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of data engineering at ASB. You'll work across squads and platforms to embed best practices, uplift engineering capability, and ensure our data solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with enterprise risk and compliance expectations.
You'll be hands-on with modern data technologies (Snowflake, dbt, Python, CI/CD, Azure), and work closely with engineers, architects, and security consultants to influence design decisions and drive adoption of robust engineering patterns.
What you'll do:
- Lead the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and high-quality data solutions.
- Coach and mentor engineers across the Data & Analytics Platform and wider organisation.
- Champion engineering excellence, automation, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align data solutions with business needs.
- Contribute to the evolution of our data engineering standards and guardrails.

Ō pūkenga | About You
- Extensive experience in data engineering, with a strong focus on cloud-native platforms and distributed systems.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python, with a track record of productionising and operationalising code.
- Deep understanding of data architecture, security, and governance.
- Exceptional communication and influencing skills - you're as comfortable in the code as you are in a design review or stakeholder session.
- A strategic, product-centric mindset and a passion for coaching and capability uplift.
